Scarifying means scoring the soil ,roughly 4 mm deep with a scarifier ,as you can see in our video below. This is not aerification ,(where aerification loosens the soil, i.e. aerates the lawn roots,via forking as an example). Scarifying in turn ensures that the lawn plants is areated.
Basically any loose grass that the lawn mower does not pick up or any moss that remains can carpet a lawn over time. This lawn cover blocks
light ,growing space and absorbs nutrients that the grass need to survive. That is why this carpet need to be removed regularly -
preferably in spring or early autumn.
The main purpose of scarifying is to stimulate lawn growth and to keep the lawn healthy.
